Do you remember your first bike?

Yes! Well it was probably my second bike, but the first one I have clear memories of. It was a third-hand, 24" wheeled 5spd 'racer'. I think my dad paid $50 for it. I rode to school on that for a couple of years, and did my first 50 mile ride on it, I think when I was 11.

How did you get into building bikes?

I built my first bike as a GCSE project in school. I made enough mistakes to want to learn more, which led me to study mechanical engineering at university. After graduating I dabbled with various bike related jobs - mountain bike guide, mechanic, wheel builder, freelance design consultant. But eventually landed a 'proper' job with Bike Friday in Oregon. This was just the right size company where the engineer could not only design but also get their hands dirty and actually make stuff - from prototypes to production tooling. I built the first 'English' frames there in the evenings, and English Cycles gradually grew from there until I went full time with it.

How would you define your style as a framebuilder?

Purposeful! I definitely look at things from an engineering perspective. The bike is a tool, so it is all about fit and function. Hopefully it ends up looking good too, but that is a by-product of the process.

Who or what has inspired you along the way?

My dad. Sadly he died before he could see where I ended up, but he taught me to use tools and seek to understand mechanical function from an early age.

Where is your favourite place to ride?

Too hard to choose! I have been fortunate to ride in some amazing places all over the world over the years. In terms of unexpectedly amazing road riding, I would say the back roads of rural Japan.

And finally, if you weren’t building bikes for a living what would you be doing?

Erm.... designing bikes? Riding bikes? I had one year where I worked outside the bike industry, and that only made me realise the importance of working with what you are passionate about. I never actually set out to be a framebuilder, but I always knew I would be doing something with bikes. Very happy to have had things work out as they did.
